Changes to Death Certificates – Patient Notice

From the 9th September, the process for GPs providing a death certificate (also known as medical certificate of the cause of death, or MMCD) will change. This change adds some extra steps to the process, which could increase the time it takes us to complete a Death Certificate. 

From this date, all deaths in England and Wales that are not referred to the Coroner will have to be discussed with a ‘medical examiner’ before the death certificate can be completed by ourselves. 

The medical examiners will review the deceased’s medical records and work with both doctors and family to complete the death certificate. They will often talk to the family about their experience of care and discuss and agree the proposed death certificate with them. 

It is only once the medical examiner has reviewed the above that we will be able to issue a Death Certificate.
